Launching of “Trikand” at Kaliningrad

A new Talwar Class stealth frigate built for the Indian Navy at Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad Russia, was launched by Mrs Ira Malhotra , wife of HE Ajai Malhotra, Ambassador of India to Russia, at a ceremony held on May 25, 2011.

The newly launched ship was named “Trikand”, meaning a mythological arrow consisting of three arrowheads. The naming ceremony was attended amongst others, by Mr Savenko, Deputy Head of the Defence Committee of the State Duma, Vice Admiral V.P. Kravchuk, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Baltic Fleet and top officials from ROSOBORONEXPORT, United Shipbuilding Corporation, Federal Service for Military Technical Cooperation, Russian Industry and public representatives.

Ambassador Malhotra conveyed greeting and congratulations to workers of the Yantar Shipyard and all associated organizations upon the successful launch.

He recalled that defence cooperation was a key pillar of the special and privileged strategic partnership between India and Russia, and that that the launch of INS Trikand reflected the sophisticated level that India-Russia defence cooperation had achieved. Ambassador Malhotra noted that joint development and construction of advanced and frontline defence system and platforms, such as INS Trikand, had become a new hallmark of India-Russia defence cooperation. He added that frigates like the INS Trikand will remain in the forefront of Indian Naval capabilities for many, many years.

The first ship under the present project, “Teg” , was launched in November 2009. The second ship, “Tarkash”, was launched in June 2010. Delivery of all three ships to the Indian Navy and their commissioning will take place during 2011-12, after completion of outfitting works and extensive trials in harbor and at sea.

The INS Trikand will carry the supersonic BrahMos missile system. It would also be armed with advanced surface to air missiles, 100mm artillery guns, and other sophisticated equipment, as also a deck- based KA-31 helicopter. The INS Trikand is powered by four gas turbines and is fitted with state –of –the –art navigation, communication and electronic warfare equipment. It is also equipped with very advanced radar and sonar systems for early detection and warning.
